BOSTON, Mass. – A four-match losing streak for the Becker College volleyball team came to a halt on Saturday when the Hawks split a tri-match. Becker lost its first match to host Wentworth College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-7), in the morning then beat Massachusetts Maritime, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-12).
The split moved Becker's record to 8-11.
Senior Samantha Caouette (Montague, Mass.) led the Hawks offensively in both matches, including eight kills in the win over Mass Maritime. She added eight blocks and four aces. Junior Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.) was next with five kills. Junior Marissa Turner (Coventry, Mass.) led the team with nine digs and three aces.
The serve of freshman Brittany Bullis (Stafford, Va.) and sophomore Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) in the first set turned a 13-11 lead into a 20-13 Becker advantage that it would hold onto to win the set. With the Hawks down 13-10 in the second set, Bullis ran off 10 points herself to swing the set Becker's way. Landry staked the Hawks to an 8-2 lead to start the third stanza and Becker cruised from there to win the match.
Early runs by Wentworth at the start of each set were the key to victory for the Leopards. The stretches of points were the product of an offense that hit .508 with only three hitting errors.
The Hawks get back into New England Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday (Oct. 14) when they play host to Southern Vermont at 7 p.m.
