VOLLEYBALL MAROONED BY CORSAIRS 3-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – In its recent back-to-to back wins, the Becker College volleyball team controlled the matches with its serve.  A third-straight win was thwarted by the tough serving of UMass Dartmouth as it beat Becker 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-15) on Thursday (September 24) at the UMD Tripp Center.

The Hawks dropped to 4-6 on the year, while UMD improved to 7-7.

The Corsairs racked up 24 services aces and kept Becker's offense out of system for most of the night. The Hawks only had 20 kills to UMass Dartmouth's 41.

Setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) recorded a double-double with 13 aces and 12 assists.  Leading Becker offensively was the junior tandem of Marrisa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) and Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.) as they each notched five kills.

Eliza Bowes had a match-high 13 kills for the hosts while setter Christina Spinazola topped all players with 30 assists. Brianna Perry was one of two UMD players with double-digit digs, recording a match-high 20.

A 6-0 run to start the match staked Becker to an early lead. The Corsairs clawed back to tie the match at 23-23, but committed an error then a Landry kill gave the Hawks the first set.

The two teams traded points early in set two, but UMD went on an 8-1 run that turned a two-point match in a comfortable lead it held for the remainder of the set. Similar runs at the start of sets three and four secured the victory for the Corsairs.

The Hawks return home for a tri-match versus Lyndon State (12 p.m.) and Maine-Presque Isle (4 p.m.).
