CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Spurred by the duo of freshman Kayla Dupree and sophomore Marissa Turner, the Becker College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Pine Manor College on Thursday. The Hawks swept the Gators 25-13, 25-14, 25-20.
Becker upped its record to 2-3 on the year while Pine Manor remained winless at 0-5.
Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) and Turner (Coventry, R.I.) had 10 and nine kills, respectively, to account for 76 percent of the Hawks' kills. Turner added three aces, six digs and a block. Setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Mass.) contributed 15 assists, four aces and eight digs. Freshman libero Brittany Bullis (Stafford, Va.) tied Landry for the team lead with eight digs while dropping a match-high seven aces.
Becker's tough serving was the difference in the match as the Hawks recorded 17 aces and kept the Gators from setting up their offense for most of the night. Pine Manor only managed six kills as a team while being out-hit by Becker .197 – to - -203.
The Hawks set the tone in set one as they raced out to a 5-0 lead on four-straights Landry service points. A Turner ace stretched the lead to 10 points (16-6) for the first time in the set. Landry got the Hawks off to a fast start in the second frame before Dupree extend Becker's lead to 11-2. PMC pulled within 16-11 before the Hawks closed the set on a 9-3 run that included three Bullis' aces.
Becker appeared to have the match in hand with a commanding 17-6 lead in the third set after seven-straight points from Turner's serve. However, the host dug in and got to within 19-14 and facing match point, 24-15, ran off five-straight points before a Turner kill ended the match.
The Hawks are back at Leicester Gymnasium on Tuesday (September 15) when they play host to Anna Maria at 7 p.m.
