BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Bouncing back from a loss in the season opener, the Becker College volleyball team picked up its first win of the season, 3-0, at Massachusetts Maritime. The Hawks made quick work of the Buccaneers - 25-13, 25-13, 25-10 - to improve to 1-1 while Mass Maritime lost its first match of the season.

Junior middle blocker Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) led all players with 11 kills while hitting .562 with three aces and five digs. Rookie Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) was next with seven kills along with a match-high six aces. Setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) nearly had a double-double with 17 assists and nine digs, both match highs.

Becker played a great match offensively, outhitting the hosts .333 – to - -.067. The Hawks also reduced serving and serve receive errors from the first match with only 15 against the Buccaneers, compared to 35 Tuesday night.

Back-to-back kills by Dupree spotted the Hawks a 6-1 lead to start the match. Half of Turner's six kills in the first set came in a row as the lead extended to 10-3. She added an ace to cap a 12-2 run that pushed Becker's advantage to 18-5. The lead grew to as high as 14 (22-8) on back-to-back kills from junior Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.).

Freshman Brittany Bullis (Stafford, Va.) served four-straight points to start the second set then Dupree added three more points to stake the Hawks to a 9-2 lead. An ace from Arianne Chipman (Hingham, Mass.) pushed the lead to 15-7, but Buccaneers fought back to within six (19-13). However, Becker responded by finishing the set on a 6-0 run that was capped by a kill and five-straight service points by Dupree.

Dupree's serving got the Hawks off to a quick start in the third set as they took a quick 6-2 advantage. After a Turner ace made it 12-5, the Buccaneers would get as close as 12-7 before Becker put the game out of reach with an 8-1 run that was capped by a Landry ace.

The Hawks return home to take on WPI on Saturday at 10 a.m. during the first match of the Worcester City Tournament.
