LEICESTER, Mass.- Wentworth Institute of Technology swept a non-conference tri-match Saturday afternoon, defeating Elms College and Becker College in both games, 3-0. The sweep lifts the Leopards record to 12-9.
The first match of day the day featured Becker College and Elms College in New England Collegiate Conference action. Becker held on for a hard fought 3-1 victory to improve their conference record to 2-1, while the Elms fell to 1-2 in league play. Becker took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-20 before the Blazers rallied for a 25-20 win in the third set. The Hawks were able to earn the victory after securing the fourth set 25-20.
Becker freshman Kirsti Hadzewycz (Daytona Beach, Fla.) led the Hawks with a game high 15 kills. Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) chipped in with eight kills, including six service aces. Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) provided the Hawks with 19 assists.
The Blazers were paced by junior Alexandra Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) with a team best 12 kills. Freshmen Kate Moriarty (Agawam, Mass.) and Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) added seven kills each, while Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) recorded a game high 32 assists.
In the second match of the day, Wentworth defeated the Elms with scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-16. Wentworth freshman Sydney Meyers (Arnold, Md.) sparked the Leopards with a game high ten kills. Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) added nine kills, while Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) set the Leopards up with 27 assists. Wentworth finished the match with a hitting percentage of .333.
Alexandra Mack and Lindsey McNiff (Kingston, R.I.) led Elms with five kills each. Shannon Bolton finished her day with 14 more assists. The two losses dropped the Blazers overall record to 4-15. Elms returns to action on Wednesday, April 15 when they host NECC rival Regis College at 7:00 p.m.
Wentworth completed the tri-match sweep when they downed Becker in the final match of the day with scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17.
Hannah Bailey earned a hitting percentage of .545, while smashing a game high 15 kills. Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) contributed eight kills, while Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.) and Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) collected in with six kills each. Shannon Ponce completed a tremendous day with 35 assists. Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) smacked six service aces and scooped out 26 digs in the win.
The Hawks struggled in their final match of the day, hitting just .077 percent. Kirsti Hadzewycz finished with a team best nine kills.
The tri-match split moves the Becker record to 5-16. The Hawks will return to the court on Monday, October 13 when they travel to Mass. Maritime for another tri-match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Wentworth returns to the court on Thursday, October 16 when they travel to Mass. Maritime at 7:00 p.m.
