Leicester, Mass.- Becker College defeated Albertus Magnus 3-2 in women's volleyball action Thursday evening. Along with winning on the court, Becker was victorious off the court as well, as they hosted their second annual Dig Pink breast cancer fundraiser.
The Hawks won comfortably in the first set 25-12. Albertus Magnus didn't tally a single kill, compared to ten Becker kills. The Falcons turned things around in the second set, winning 25-21. The set was neck and neck until Maritza Rosemond (New Haven, Conn.) served three straight aces, securing the win for the Falcons. The Lady Hawks battled back from a 6-0 deficit in the third set, winning 25-20. Albertus Magnus forced the match to a fifth set when the Falcons clawed their way to 25-21 win in the fourth set. Becker finally prevailed in the fifth set, defeating the Falcons 15-10.
Katelyn Burns (Fall River, Mass.) led the Lady Hawks with ten kills. Julie Trcka (Shelton, Conn.) was the team leader in digs with 20. Senior captain Kelsea Laubenstein (Randolph, Mass.) chipped in with 25 assists; the 25 assist puts Laubenstein over 1,300 assists for her career. Nicole Morse (Alton, NH) and Catherine Vacca (Marlboro, Mass.) stood tall at the net, blocking four Albertus Magnus attacks. On top of her two blocks, Morse added nine kills in the victory.
With the win the Becker improved to 7-14 on the season. The Lady Hawks will travel to Southern Vermont on Saturday for an NECC tri-match. Becker will continue raising money for breast cancer when the host the second half of their Dig Pink event next Tuesday night when the Lady Hawks do battle with Suffolk University at 7pm.
