BOSTON, Mass. – Becker College defeated Newbury College 3-1 in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Winsor School. The win lifts the Hawks record to 8-5 (3-1 NECC) while the Nighthawks sink to 4-8 (1-3 NECC).
The Nighthawks held the lead for a healthy portion of the first half after senior Carly Gibbard (Commack, N.Y.) got the scoring started with her first goal of the year in the 14th minute, slotting home the goal on a pass from Shannon Walsh (Massapequa, N.Y.).
Becker's Ciara McKissick (Charlton, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1 in the 40th minute. Just 3:25 later, McKissick struck again for her fourth goal of the year on a shot that beat Nighthawks sophomore Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) just over her outstretched hands.
The Nighthawks had their best opportunity of the second half with just under ten minutes remaining. Looking to tie the match, a cross from the right wing found the foot of Amanda Cardoso (Watertown, Mass.), who redirected the cross on goal, but Becker keeper Jordan Martel (Chicopee, Mass.) was able to get just enough of the ball to make the save.
The Hawks would add an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when sophomore Anja Russell (Cumberland, Maine) knocked home her second goal of the season on a rebound that Sass couldn't gather.
Sass made 16 saves on the afternoon while Martel turned away four shots in net for the Hawks.
Becker returns to NECC action on Wednesday, October 12th when they host Bay Path at 4:00 p.m.
