LEICESTER, Mass. – The Becker College women's soccer team lost a heart-breaking 2-1 double-overtime match against visiting Fitchburg State University on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field in Leicester. The Hawks of Becker (2-1) take their first loss of the season to the Falcons of Fitchburg (2-0).
Becker jumped ahead in the ninth minute, as freshman forward Adrianna Lake (Fitchburg, Mass. / Montachusett Regional) scored her third goal in as many games. The equalizer came just seven minutes later when Fitchburg junior forward Whitney Mansfield (Lunenburg, Mass. / Lunenburg) found the back of the net for the first goal scored against the Hawks this season. The score remained 1-1 heading into halftime.
In the second period, the two teams put on a show, with both teams repeatedly coming up just short on scoring opportunities. 90 minutes proved not to be enough as the fog rolled across the field. The two exhausted team regrouped, but still neither team could score the winner.
Finally, in double-overtime, Mansfield found Fitchburg freshman midfielder Brittny Peralta (Leominster, Mass. / St. Bernard's) who launched a strike from 15 yards out that found the back of the net.
Becker sophomore goalkeeper Jordyn Martel (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) finished with seven saves. Martel entered the day leading the NECC in save percentage and goals against average. Fitchburg freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Foster (Leominster, Mass. / Leominster) posted four stops. The Falcons outshot the Hawks, 19-9.
Becker will travel to Fisher College for their next contest, coming on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Fitchburg will be hosting WPI on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
