Leicester, Mass. --- The Becker College women's soccer program opened their 2016 season with a 4-0 victory against the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester.
It is the second straight year that the Hawks of Becker (1-0) open their season with a win over the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime (0-1).
Midway through the first half, Becker sophomore striker Lindsey Keith (Sutton, Mass. / Sutton), the top returning scorer from last season, broke free for the Hawks' first goal of 2016, finding the back of the net unassisted in the 19th minute. It was Keith's 13th career goal for Becker.
Then with 17 minutes remaining in the first frame, Becker junior defender Meghan Bealka (Freetown, Mass. / Apponequet Regional) took advantage of a failed Maritime clear off a save, blasting a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the goal for her first score of the year. It was the fourth goal of Bealka's career.
The teams went into halftime with Becker still up 2-0.
The second period saw Becker take a 3-0 lead just 35 seconds in when Bealka found junior midfielder Maria Colon (Wharton, N.J. / Morris Hills) for another strike. It was Colon's tenth career goal while playing for the Hawks, and put Becker firmly in the driver's seat.
Finally, in the 87th minute, the Hawks put the cherry on top of their performance when freshman forward Adrianna Lake (Fitchburg, Mass. / Montachusett Regional) scored her first career goal off an assist from Keith.
Becker sophomore goalkeeper Jordyn Martel (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) recorded two saves for her fourth career shutout. Mass Maritime freshman goalkeeper Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) had six stops in net.
The Hawks of Becker will be back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Green Mountain College to take on the Eagles in a 1:00 p.m. matchup. Mass Maritime will host the AMCats of Anna Maria College in their home opener for their next game, also on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
