Plunkett Nets 60th Goal, Powering Women's Soccer Over NightHawks

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS.- The Newbury College women's soccer team fell to Becker College, 4-0 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Wednesday afternoon. Reigning NECC Player of the Week, senior forward Caroline Plunkett (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) registered a natural hat-trick, scoring the first three goals of the game to lead the Hawks to their seventh victory of the season and push their win-streak to four games.

Newbury came out of the gate strong, pressuring the Becker defense early. At the 12 minute mark, junior midfielder Jessica Haralson (Lebanon, Conn.) stripped the ball away from her Hawks' counterpart and knocked it forward to wide open first year forward Corrinn Niski (Oxford, Conn.). Able to break free of Becker defenders, Niski went one-on-one with Hawks' junior goalkeeper Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) and fired a laser in her direction but Rhodes was able to come up with the same.

Four minutes later, Plunkett broke up the scoreless contest with her 17th goal of the season in the 36th minute to put the Hawks on the scoreboard first.

The contest stood 1-0 until 15 minutes into the second period when Plunkett added an insurance goal, heading in a rebound at the far-side corner off a rebound from sophomore midfielder Alyssa Bond(Thompson, Conn.). The New York native registered her third goal of the game, and 19th of the season six minutes later while first year defender Jasmine Hussein (Haverhill, Mass.) knocked in the fourth and final goal of the game with three minutes remaining.

Newbury falls to 1-9 and 0-6 in conference play while the win moves Becker to 7-5-2 and 5-1 in NECC action. The Nighthawks return to the pitch on Saturday October 20th when they host nearby rival Wheelock College at 1:00 p.m. The Hawks will also be in action on Saturday, hosting NECC foe Mitchell College (3-7-0, 3-3-0 NECC) at 4:00 p.m.
