LEICESTER, MASS. – The Becker College women's soccer team overcame a three goal deficit, but fell to Rhode Island College 4-3 in overtime at Alumni Field. The win lifts the Anchorwomen to 2-7, while the Hawks fall to 3-5-2.
Rhode Island College got on the board 7:08 into the game when Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, R.I.) drove a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for an early 1-0 advantage. The Anchorwomen added to their lead in the 12th minute when Ryley Slater (West Warwick, R.I.) setup Cassey Arines (Warwick, R.I.) for her first goal of the season. Rhode Island College scored their third goal of the half when Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, R.I.) threaded a pass to Chelsea Combs (Ashford, Conn.), giving the Anchorwomen what appeared to be a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Becker finally found the back of the net in the 67th minute when Caroline Plunkett (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) blasted a shot which ricocheted off the crossbar into the net. The Hawks pulled within one of the Anchorwomen when freshman Jaclyn Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal. Becker tied the game in the 80th minute when Alycia Dery (Millville, Mass.) connected with Plunkett for the second time, sending the game into overtime. The Hawks outshot Rhode Island College 12-4 in the second half.
With 6:47 remaining in the second overtime, Gabrielle Turner took advantage of a miscue by the Becker defense, allowing her to break free all alone for the game winning goal.
Rhode Island College goalie Audrey Maia (Norton, Mass.) made 11 saves in the game, while Becker goalie Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) turned away six shots. The Anchorwomen will shoot for their first winning streak of the season when they travel to Little East rival Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, October 6 at 12:00 p.m. The Hawks will try to end a three game losing streak when they host NECC opponent Bay Path College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
