DUDLEY, Mass. – The Becker College and Nichols College women's soccer teams played to a 0-0 double overtime stalemate on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Michael J. Vendetti Field. With the result of the non-conference contest, the Bison move to 2-3-2 on the season while Becker sports a 2-2-2 record.
Nichols first-year Erica Carey (South Windsor, Conn.) stopped three shots in the first 45 minutes of action. Classmate Melissa Toomey (Saugus, Mass.) was called upon to make one save in the final 65 minutes of the contest as the pair would get credit for the shared shutout. Junior Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) collected a game-high six saves in her second clean sheet of the season for the Hawks.
Rhodes was tested early as sophomore Alyssa Tosti (Douglas, Mass.) attempted to bury a feed from first-year Chelsey Mahoney (Dracut, Mass.) only to have the ball scooped up by the keeper at 20:19. Nichols held a slim 8-5 edge on shots as Becker took four of the five corner kicks awarded in the frame.
Becker had a chance in the 51st minute as a rocket off the foot of senior captain Caroline Plunkett (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) hit the post. In the 74th minute, Bison graduate student Kimberly Cummings (Woodbridge, Va.) looked to put the Bison on the board only to be thwarted by Rhodes. At the end of regulation, Nichols outshot the Hawks 13-8 while Becker held a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.
In the overtime sessions, Nichols had a 3-1 advantage in shots as neither team put the ball on net. The Bison had the only corner kick opportunity in the final 20 minutes.
Nichols hosts Roger Williams at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night at Vendetti Field as part of Homecoming Weekend. Becker makes the trip to Boston on Saturday to take on Wheelock in a NECC showdown at 4:00 p.m.
