Leicester, Mass. -Alycia Dery (Millville, Mass.) scored in the 82nd minute as Becker defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1, in women's soccer action Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. The Hawks of Becker are now 2-2 while the Falcons of Fitchburg State drop to 1-4.
The visitors got on the board in the 22nd minute when Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass.) put a shot past the outstretched arm of Becker keeper Kaitlyn Rose (North Attleboro, Mass.), putting the Falcons up 1-0. That score would hold up going into the half.
After Becker Head Coach Samly Phonesavanh made some halftime adjustments, the Hawks wasted little time regaining control of the situation, as Caroline Plunkett (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) took a perfect pass from Alyssa Bond (Thompson, Conn.) for the equalizer in the 50th minute.
Becker dominated possession in the last 30 minutes of regulation, as a frenzy of activity on the offensive end led to several scoring chances that all seemed to come up just short. Fitchburg State nearly retook the lead in the 74th minute off a corner kick, leading to an excellent scoring chance for Jessica Sullivan (Milton, Mass.). Rose was up to the challenge this time, picking up one of her eight saves on the day.
The game appeared headed into overtime until Becker's Dery took advantage of a quick breakaway, finally finding daybreak and her Hawk-leading fifth goal of the season.
With just 1:42 left on the clock, Fitchburg State's Kayla Bridges (Foxboro, Mass.) took the ball deep and was all alone as she charged the goal. Rose timed her move perfectly, coming up with the save and preserving the win. Fitchburg State keeper Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) finished with five saves.
The Hawks are back in action Saturday, September 15th when they host Colby-Sawyer at 1:00pm. Fitchburg State travels to Bridgewater State on Saturday for a 4:30pm contest.
