Strong First Half Lifts Women's Soccer Over The Mountaineers

Leicester, Mass.- Becker College used  five, first half goals to defeat Southern Vermont 6-1 in New England Collegiate Conference women' soccer action Tuesday evening.

Becker junior Jodi Theriault (Woodstock, Conn.) got things started for the Hawks in the 20th minute when she blasted a shot from 20 yards out, scoring into the left corner of the net. Theriault scored her second goal of the game in the 26th minute on an assist from Alycia Dery (Milleville, Mass.), giving the Hawks a 2-0 advantage. Before the end of the first half, Becker got two goals from Caroline Plunkett (Rockaway, N.Y.) and one from Dery, putting the Hawks in front 5-0 at the break.

Becker sophomore Katie Smith (Worcester, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season in 54th minute, putting the Hawks in front 6-0. The score remained the same until the Mountaineers finally got on the board when Connor Crawford (Tolland, Conn.) headed a ball into the bottom left corner of the net, making the final 6-1.

Southern Vermont goalkeeper Catrina Cecchini (Montville, Conn.) made 13 saves in a losing effort. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the NECC.

Becker keeper Katherine Cormier (San Diego, Calif.) turned away two shots as the Hawks improved to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the NECC. The Hawks return to action Saturday when they travel to Daniel Webster at nooon.
