LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's lacrosse team nearly extended their 2018 season with a playoff berth in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference playoffs, but they came up just short on Saturday in an 8-7 loss to visiting Newbury College at Alumni Field in Leicester.
The Hawks of Becker finish their season with a 1-13 overall record, going 1-6 in NECC play. The Nighthawks of Newbury move on with a 3-10 record; 3-4 against league opponents.
Down 7-2 at one points and trailing 8-4 with less than nine minutes remaining, Becker reeled off three straight goals to pull to within one with 4:51 to go. But Newbury clamped down, holding the Hawks to just one shot the rest of the way.
Becker sophomore midfielder Samantha Carter (Boothbay Harbor, Maine / Boothbay Region) finished with four goals for the Hawks, including the shot that pulled them to within one in the final five minutes. Sophomore midfielder Cassandra Nelson (Exeter, N.H. / Exeter) had a hat trick with an assist. Junior goalie Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Kents Hill) stopped 10 of 18 shots in net.
Newbury freshman Sophia Kiasi (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored a game-high five goals. Freshman Venezia Delgadillo (Sharon, Mass.) scored a pair of goals on the afternoon. Freshman Hannah Gorham (Lyman, Maine) scored a goal and added an assist.
Congratulations to the whole team on the conclusion of their season.
