Women's Lacrosse Battles Past Buccaneers

LEICESTER, Mass. – Becker College defeated Mass. Maritime 12-10 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Thursday evening at Alumni Field. The win lifts the Hawks record to 3-8, while the Buccaneers slip to 4-3.

The Buccaneers got on the board 4:06 into the game when Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) scored top shelf after splitting the Hawks defense.

Kailee Ruyack (Beacon, N.Y.) tied the game for the Hawks when spun past a pair of Buccaneer defenders, scoring with a behind the back shot for her 21st maker of the season.  Becker took the lead just 2:14 later after Erika Galdamez (Concord, Calif.) scored off of a Mass. Maritime turnover. Becker increased their lead to 3-1 when Victoria Belcher (Seekonk, Mass.) scored with a bounce shot on a centering pass from Ruyack. Just 43 seconds later Galdamez took the ensuing draw control down the field for her 17th goal of the season, upping the Hawks lead to 4-1.

Mass. Maritime ended the Hawks run with 11:02 remaining in the half when Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass.) gather a failed clear attempt, redirecting a shot off the post and  past Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine).

Becker responded 2:11 later as Galdamez completed the hat-trick after sprinting past the Maritime defense to make the score 5-2.

With 6:31 left in the half, Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.) threaded a shot between Storey and the post to cut the Hawks lead to 5-3. Overstreet would follow with a free-position shot tally to pull the Buccaneers within striking distance.

The Hawks gave themselves some breathing room with before the half when Meghan Bealka (Freetown, Mass.) tickled the twine for her eighth goal of the season.  Bealka closed the half with a centering pass to Belcher off of a free-position shot to make the score 7-4.

Mass. Maritime scored just 1:02 into the second half when Hunt bounced a shot into the bottom left corner of the Hawks net.

The Buccaneers excitement was short lived as Belcher finished the hat-trick on a free-position shot to make the score 8-5.

Mass. Maritime climbed back into the game when Overstreet found the back of the net a shot between two Becker defenders.  Just 1:44 later, Meghan Doherty (Malden, Mass.) tallied her third goal of the season to cut the Buccaneers deficit to 8-7. Mass. Maritime completed the comeback with 13:04 left on the clock when Hunt netted her third goal of the game on a man advantage opportunity.

Becker regained the lead with 9:07 remaining when Galdamez centered a pass to Rachel Welling (Charlestown, N.H.) for a quick shot goal. The Buccaneers came sailing back just 20 seconds later on Hunt's fourth tally of the game to even the score at 9-9.

Ruyack gave Becker the lead again when she scored after coming from behind the Mass. Maritime net, beating the defender one-on-one. Ruyack then scored on a free-position shot to up the Becker advantage to 11-9.

With 1:56 remaining, Hunt brought the Mass. Maritime back within striking distance with a bounce shot goal on a free-position attempt.

Bealka sealed the win for the Hawks with a free-position goal with 45 seconds on the clock to make the final score 12-10.

Storey earned the victory after turning away 13 shots for the Hawks. Mass. Martime goalie Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made six stops in the loss.

Both teams return to conference action on Saturday, April 9th. Becker will travel to Bay Path University for an NECC tilt beginning at 1:00 p.m. Mass. Maritime will head to MASCAC rival Bridgewater State University at 6:00 p.m.
