PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The Becker College women's basketball team defeated host University of Maine at Presque Isle, 59-40, on Sunday. The Becker Hawks improve to 2-2 while the Owls of Maine-Presque Isle fall to 0-3.
Both teams would come out of the gate slow, as almost five minutes would tick off the clock before the Hawks would hit their first field goal. That shot would give Becker the lead, and they would never trail after that point, as a 10-6 run would give them a six-point lead after the first quarter.
The Owls would trail by as many as 16 in the second quarter, but a 9-2 run to end the quarter would keep UMPI within striking distance. The would continue their run to start the third quarter, and find themselves down five with just over seven minutes left in that period. The Owls would go cold offensively from that point on, and would not hit a field goal for the rest of the quarter. Becker would take a 20-point lead going into the final period.
The Hawks would extend to a 32-point lead before UMPI could get their offense going again. The Owls were able to shoot well down the stretch, but the deficit was too much to overcome, and UMPI would fall by a score of 59-40.
The full court pressure by the Hawks would play a big factor, as the Owls would turn the ball over 30 times.
Mariah Triplett (SO, Coral Springs, FL) would lead all scorers with 18 points off the bench.
The Owls were led by Emilia Churchill (SO, Washburn, ME) who would hit three of five from three-point to total 11 points. Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) would end the game with a double-double, scoring ten points and grabbing ten rebounds.
Becker will be back on the court on Tuesday when they travel to UMass Boston for a 5:00 p.m. games.
