Softball: Becker drops Elms on Senior Day

Softball Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept both ends of their Saturday double-header against visiting Elms College, winning 8-3 in game one, before pulling away in game two, 5-1. The games were played on the campus of WPI in Worcester.

• Senior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) was dominant both at the plate and in the circle. The senior team captain picked up the win in game two, allowing just one earned run over seven innings. At the plate, Belenchia went five-of-six with three runs scored.
• Freshman catcher Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third of game two, giving her nine home runs in her rookie season and setting the Becker College single season record for home runs. For the day, Iacovelli had five hits with one double and three RBI.
• Senior second baseman Alyssa Columb (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) finished with four hits with two doubles and two runs batted in.
• Senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) had three hits with two doubles and one RBI.
• Freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) struck out a career-high nine batters in her game one victory, then had an RBI base hit in game one.
• Sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) had two hits, a double and two RBI.
• Junior third baseman Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) went three-of-four at the plate.
• Freshman outfielder Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) had two hits and scored three runs on the day.
• Senior first baseman Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) had two hits on the day.
• Junior infielder Samantha Buzgo (Beacon Falls, Conn. / Woodland Regional) went one-for-three with two RBI.

Prior to the game, the Becker College athletics department and the softball program recognized the outstanding senior class of this year's team as part as Senior Day. Murphy, Belenchia, Weston, Columb and Niemann were honored by coaches, family members and fans for their incredible accomplishments with the Hawks, as the team this year has gone 20-4 since returning from Florida spring break. Each of these five young women have made incredible contributions not only on the field but for the entire Becker community as a whole. Although their playing careers may be coming to an end, they will forever be part of the Hawks family.

The Hawks are back on the field on Sunday when they travel to Eastern Nazarene College for their regular season finale. Game one is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
