LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team won 1-0 over visiting Bay Pay University in the double-elimination round of the New England Collegiate Conference Playoffs on Thursday afternoon at Russell Field in Leicester.
The Hawks of Becker, playing as the number two seed, are now 20-15 on the season while the Wildcats of Bay Path, playing as the number three seed, finish the day with a 21-15 record.
Becker would strike first in the bottom of the first when a ball hit by senior catcher Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) went through the second baseman's legs on an error, allowing senior outfielder Rebecca Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst) to score all the way from second to put the Hawks up 1-0.
That proved to be the only score of the game in a classic pitcher's duel. Becker senior pitcher Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland), pitching on her home field for the final time in a storied career, picked up the win, having allowed no runs and just two hits in seven innings, striking out seven batters. Bay Path sophomore Felicia Gaillardetz (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) saw a strong effort wasted after she allowed just three hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out seven Hawks.
Becker freshman shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) went two-for-three at the plate in her first career playoff game.
Both Becker and Bay Path will travel to Regis College on Saturday for the final round of the NECC Championships, opponents to be determined.
