Hurley nabs 200th career victory as Softball sweeps Wildcats

LONGMEADOW, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept both games of their New England Collegiate Conference double-header at Bay Path University on Saturday in Longmeadow.

With a 6-1 victory in game one, Becker head coach Dick Hurley has recorded 200 wins in his head coaching career.

Becker improves to 6-8 on the season with a 4-0 record against conference opponents while Bay Path drops to 9-11 and 2-2 in the NECC standings.

Senior pitcher Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland) was in top form in game one, striking out seven Wildcats and allowing just one earned run over seven innings. Lee also recorded two hits at the plate, including a double. Freshman Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) got the Hawks on the board in the top of the third inning with an RBI single down the right field line. In the top of the sixth, Becker exploded for five runs, as freshman Mary Wagner (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow) drove in two runs on an RBI single, followed by one run coming in off the bat of freshman Alyssa Columb (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and senior outfielder Rebecca Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst) driving in two more.

In Becker's 4-1 game two victory, junior pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) recorded seven strikeouts for the Hawks. Ellis went three-for-four with an RBI double while junior Brianna Herforth (Peru, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) had two hits out of the lead-off spot, including an RBI single in the fifth. Junior catcher Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) also drove in a run off a single. Sophomore Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) went two for four at the plate with a run scored.

Hurley's storied 15 year career has culminated in his unprecedented success in his six years at Becker, where he led the Hawks to their first NECC Championship and NCAA appearance in 2016.

Becker is back on the field on Sunday when they face Lesley University in another double-header played at WPI. First pitch comes at 4:30 p.m.
