BANGOR, MAINE --- The Becker College men's soccer team opened their 2018 season with a 2-1 loss at Husson University on Saturday in Bangor, Maine.
With just six minutes left to play in the opening half, the Eagles crashed the net on a perfectly curved in corner by Bryce Hayman. Laying out head first, Ian Lee connected with the ball to earn his first goal of the season off a header.
The Eagles held onto the 1-0 advantage with a number of scoring opportunities. Determined to find the back of the net, Ali Essallamy snuck past the defenders, nearly one-on-one with the goalie and fired a shot just barely out of reach of Becker goalie, Tyler Marzocchi's, outstretched hands, unfortunately, just inches too far to left as it smacked off the post. Husson continued to fire shots and finally, off the foot of Alvaro Valls thanks to a thru ball by Rod Ghanayem, the Eagles doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 86th minute.
The Hawks responded under 90 seconds later with a goal of their own off a breakaway. Finding the far side of the net to bring the score to 2-1, freshman forward Isaiah McCaskill (Springfield, Mass. / Springfield Renaissance) scored his first career goal to help his teammates find a final surge of energy to try and tie up the game in the remaining minutes. Husson stood strong and held onto the 2-1 win.
Becker is back in action on Sunday when they play at the University of Maine Farmington in a 12:00 p.m. matchup.
