Men’s Ice Hockey Opens New Year with Setback to Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Becker men's ice hockey team opened up the New Year with a 6-2 setback to the Owls of Westfield State in Thursday afternoon non-conference action at the Amelia Park Ice Arena.

Daniel Backstrom (Helsinki, Finland) won the first faceoff of the game to put the Owls in the offensive zone.  24 seconds later he slammed home a rebound shot to give Westfield State a 1-0 lead.  Paul Fyrs (Portland, Ore.) and Gerard Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) logged assists on the goal.  The Owls would hold the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period.  Each team fired off 11 shots on net during the first frame.



Westfield State upped their lead to 2-0 just 1:55 into the second frame.  Wyatt Turmbley (Campbell River, B.C.) scored his first goal of the season with a backhand shots on the left side.  Danny Ferri (Chelmsford, Mass.) assisted the Owls' second goal of the game.  Becker came storming back when Stephen Wolf (Somersworth, N.H.) banked a shot off an Owls defenseman to cut the lead to 2-1.  Just a minute and a half later, the Hawks added another from Kevin Morello (Monroe Township, N.J.) to even the game at two apiece.  The tie did not last long, however, as Jake Ratcliffe (Canterbury, New Zealand) put the Owls ahead once again off a feed from Justin Alves (Woburn, Mass.) just before the end of the period.  Westfield State outshot Becker 15-19 in the period.



Westfield State wrapped up the game with three third period goals, including one power-play goal, for a 6-2 final.  The third period goals came from Ferri, Rob Neuwirth (Zlin, Czech Republic) and Johnny Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.).  The Owls outshot Becker, 17-19, in the third.

  • Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Quebec) had 27 saves for the Owls.
  • Cody Foster (Saugus, Calif.) collected 37 saves for the Hawks.



The Hawks will begin a three-game home stand on Tuesday, Jan. 8, entertaining Framingham State in a 3:40 p.m. matchup at the Worcester Ice Center.
