2018-19 Men’s Ice Hockey Season Preview

Senior forward, Corey Shafer, of the men's ice hockey team

The Becker College men's ice hockey team begins its third season under head coach Michael Chartrand this week.

The Hawks said farewell to last year's team-leaders in points and goals (John Dutney and James Wallace, respectively), but will look to senior forward Corey Schafer (Johnstown, Penn. / Missoula Maulers) and sophomore forward Charles Costello (Philadelphia, Penn. / Cape Cod Islanders) to lead the way in scoring. Schafer was second on the team in points last year with eight goals and 14 assists while Costello was second in goals with ten and five assists.

The Hawks also welcome back senior Stephen Wolf (Somersworth, N.H. / New Hampshire Monarchs) and junior Alex Kielczewski (Grand Prairie, Texas / Portland Jr. Pirates) at the forward position, and return top defenders in junior Brian Greene (Barnstead, N.H. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) and junior Trey McMillen (Grapevine, Texas / Rochester Ice Hawks). Junior Grant Martens (Bloomington, Minn. / Helena Bighorns) will be back in goal this season, as he posted a team-high .895 save percentage during the 2017-18 season.

Some promising newcomers for the team include Romain Wild, Caleb Labrie, Tyler Forest and Jason Diamond.

This will be the Hawks' second season playing at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center, downtown Worcester's state-of-the-art hockey facility.

The team will open their regular season on Friday, October 26th at the Ice Center when they face the Lancers of Worcester State in a "Hockey for Hopes" ALS Awareness game. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  Becker Athletics students can sign up for the spirit bus at: https://hockeyforhope.eventbrite.com/
