Davis Helps Men’s Hoops Shock Springfield

LEICESTER, Mass. –  Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass.) put up a career-high 34 points, shooting 66.6 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range, to help the Hawks shock the Pride of Springfield College 74-70 in Becker's home opener Tuesday evening inside the Leicester Gymnasium.

Springfield College's Elijah Moreno-Winston (Oswego, Ill.) put the Pride up first on a layup 50 seconds into the game.  The Pride held the lead throughout the first half, and saw its largest lead of 11 with 8:52 remaining in the half succeeding a jumper from Heath Post (Cheshire, Conn.) and a trey from Charlie Clay (Southborough, Mass.).  Despite the lead, Becker kept picking away at the score, as Davis was a huge part in keeping the Hawks in the game.  Becker's senior guard, Davis, put up 18 points in the half on six field goals – including three triples – and three free throws as the Hawks trailed 36-35 heading into the second half.



Moreno-Winston scored the first bucket of the second half to give the Pride a three-point advantage, however Becker responded with a Mateus Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) layup to get within one.  Ribeiro's basket propelled a 13-0 run for the Hawks, led by Davis who had back-to-back three's.  The Hawks held their largest lead of nine twice with 17:05 and 12:04 to go in the frame.  Springfield punched away at the Hawks' lead with a 7-0 run on baskets from Trey Witter (Unionville, Conn.) and Deonte Sandifer (Pittsfield, Mass.) to get within two, and later tied it at 62-62 with a triple from Cam Earle (South Hadley, Mass.) with 4:44 to go.  Becker regained the lead with consecutive buckets from Ribeiro and held off the Pride for the remaining minutes, prevailing 74-70.



  • Davis' career-high 34 points was scored on 12 field goals (six triples) and four free throws. He also added in three assists and two steals for the Hawks.
  • Ribeiro recorded 11 points and a block for Becker, while Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn.) was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • Byron Salfran (Miami, Fla.) assisted four shots and logged two steals on the occasion.
  • Springfield's offense was led by Post who was one rebound short of a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Clay posted 12 points while Earle and Witter chipped in eight each for the Pride.
  • The Hawks shot 50.9% from the field, making 28-of-55 field goals. The visitors shot 49% (25-51).
  • More than half of Springfield's points (47) came from bench players.
  • Becker held a 33-29 edge in rebounds.
  • Note: Last week, the Pride were ranked No. 7 in the country.



The Hawks travel to Clark this Thursday (Nov. 26) to matchup against the Cougars for a 7 p.m. tilt.  The Pride will break until next Wednesday (Dec. 5) when they travel to Trinity for a 7 p.m. game.
