LEICESTER, Mass. – Becker College defeated Newbury College 84-55 in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The win lifts the Hawks record to 9-8 (4-4 NECC), while the Nighthawks slide to 4-14 (2-7 NECC).
The two teams battled through five lead changes in the first half. The Nighthawks controlled the pace early, taking leads as much as six points. A layup by Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.) with 15:14 remaining in the first half, gave Newbury their largest lead of the game at 11-5.
Becker responded with a 9-2 run, capped off by a Donovin Ford-Hayes (Windsor Locks, Conn.) three-pointer to put the Hawks in front 14-13. With Becker trialing 24-21 with 4:49 remaining in the half, Jessy Michaud (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) nailed a three-pointer, propelling the Hawks on 16-0 run to finish the first stanza.
The Nighthawks were able to cut the Hawks lead to 11 early in the second half, but could never get back into the game. Jessy Michaud paced the Hawks with a team-best 18 points, going six for seven from beyond the arc. Donovin Ford-Hayes finished with 12 points and seven boards. Reginald Finney (Ansonia, Conn.) chipped in with ten points, while Rashuan Liggon (Elizabeth, N.J.) was a rebound shy of a double-double off the bench, scoring 11 points and nine boards.
Kwame Thompson led all scorers with a game-high 22 points. Cameron Owen (Concord, N.H.) added 11 points, while Milciades Carrasco (Haverhill, Mass.) finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Both teams continue NECC action On Tuesday, February 3. Becker will travel to Regis College at 7:00 p.m., while Newbury heads to Southern Vermont College at 8:00 p.m.
