LEICESTER, Mass. – Becker College senior Tyler Roberson (Irvington, N.J.) scored his 1,000th career point, as the Hawks held on for a 66-60 win over Newbury College in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening. The win lifts the Hawks record to 12-8 (8-3 NECC), while the Nighthawks fall to 2-18 (2-9 NECC).
Becker held a 23-33 lead at halftime and increased that advantage to 14 in the second half before the Nighthawks came soaring back. With 14:01 remaining in regulation, freshman Kyle Credle (Queens, N.Y.) hit a baseline jumper to give Becker a 41-27 lead. The Nighthawks responded by going on a 13-2 to cutting the Becker margin to 43-40 with 11:30 on the clock.
Becker clung to 54-51 lead after Scott Dulaire (Bloomfield, Conn.) hit a pair of free-throws with 6:33 remaining in regulation. Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) brought Newbury within one with a lay-up, but the Hawks held their ground when David Maturah (Windsor Locks, Conn.) brought the crowd to their feet with a dunk to make the score 56-53. A Kyle Credle lay-up and a Donovin Ford-Hayes (Windsor, Conn.) three pointer increased the Becker lead to 61-53 with 3:46 left on the clock.
Newbury would pull with three points with 00:35 remaining in regulation, but Tyler Roberson sealed the victory when he drove to hole for his 1,000th career point, making the score 65-60. Roberson became the 15th basketball player in program history to reach the 1,000th point milestone.
Roberson led Becker with 17 points in just 21 minutes of action. David Maturah added 16 points, while Donovin Ford-Hayes chipped in with 12 points. Rashaun Liggon (Elizabeth, N.J.) scored eight points and pulled down a game high ten rebounds.
Eric Watson finished with a game high 18 points and six assists. Daniel Thelemaque (Somerville, Mass.) tallied 15 points and Milciades Carrasco (Haverhill, Mass.) contributed 11 points.
Both teams return to the court on Thursday, February 6 with Becker hosting Mitchell at 7:00 p.m., while Newbury travels to Lesley University for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
