NEC rises past Field Hockey, 4-2

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College field hockey team lost 4-2 to visiting New England College on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field on the campus of Becker College in Leicester.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • New England College got the scoring started first when senior forward Leah Foster (Greenwich, N.Y. / Greenwich) found the back of the net, assisted by senior forward Brittany Tierney (Ottawa, Ontario / Daniel Webster) as the Pilgrims took a 1-0 lead.
  • The Hawks found the answer in the 18th minute when Becker sophomore forward Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical), the two-time Becker Athlete of the Week these last two weeks, took a short pass from senior defender Samantha Carter (Boothbay Harbor, Maine / Boothbay Region), the 2018 NECC Player of the Year, and launched it home from just inside the circle for her 17th goal of the season, tying it up at 1-1.
  • Becker took the lead in the 23rd minute when Iacovelli collected a rebounded save off the stick of senior midfielder Amy Cooper (Monument, Colo. / Lewis Palmer), the 2017 NECC Player of the Year, and quickly scored her 18th goal of the season to put the Hawks ahead 2-1. That score would hold up going into halftime.
  • In the 36th minute, it would be NEC tying it up as Tierney shot it home unassisted, The Pilgrims tied it at 2-2.
  • NEC poured it on with a goal from junior defender Zoe Pedler (Bunbury, Australia / Churchlands), assisted by freshman forward Lilli McCormack (Guilford, Maine / Piscataquis Community). The Pilgrims took a 3-2 lead in the final quarter.
  • In the 47th minute, NEC would ride their momentum to an insurance goal, as freshman forward Makenna Platte (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Memorial) scored her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Tierney. The Pilgrims now lead 4-2, which would hold up for the final score.

FOR THE HAWKS OF BECKER

  • Becker sophomore goalkeeper Baileigh Griese (Woodstock, N.Y. / Onteora) tallied five saves in net for the Hawks.
  • Becker sophomore defender Emma Perry (East Bridgewater, Mass. / East Bridgewater) tallied a defensive save in the first half.

FOR THE PILGRIMS OF NEC

  • NEC freshman goalkeeper Ellie Philben (Havre de Grace, Md. / Hartford Tech) finished with eight saves.

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Husson University for a 4:00 p.m. game. The Pilgrims host Manhattanville College in their next contest, that coming on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
