Football Comes Up Short in Season Finale at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine. – The Becker College football team came up short in their season finale, as the University of New England (UNE) Nor'Easters edged the Hawks by a score of 24-20 in Commonwealth Coast Conference Football (CCCF) action Saturday afternoon.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

It was a three-point game midway through the fourth quarter – the Nor'Easters with the slight lead.  UNE made the break with 1:29 to go in the game when Jack Mahoney (Hudson, N.H.) came through with a 28-yard rushing touchdown to put the Nor'Easters ahead 24-14 with 1:29 to go in the game.  Becker did not give up and scored a touchdown as the clock expired, but fell short 24-20.

UNE was the first to score midway through the first quarter when Kevin Heintz (Brewster, N.Y.) kicked a good 33-yard field goal, following an eight-play, 54-yard drive. 

The Nor'Easters held the lead until there was 11:53 on the clock in the second quarter when Becker's David Collins (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored for the Hawks on a six-yard run, following a UNE turnover.  A good two-point conversion from Randy Morgan (Spring Hill, Fla.) gave Becker an 8-3 lead.

UNE stole back the lead before the half when Mikey Brennan (Dedham, Mass.) caught a 23-yard pass from Brian Peters (Darien, Conn.) for a touchdown.  A good Heintz kick gave the Nor'Easters a 10-8 advantage with just over two minutes left in the half to go.

Halfway through the third quarter, UNE's Brennan and Peters connected again on an eight-yard pass which capped off a nine-play, 37-yard drive to increase the Nor'Easters lead to nine (17-8).

Becker added to the scoreboard with six and a half minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Collins scored his second touchdown of the day (first receiving touchdown of the day) on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Mac Kimball (Bow, N.H.).  Morgan attempted another two-point conversion, but it failed to hold the score at 17-14, in favor of the Nor'Easters.

UNE had an insurance touchdown with 1:29 to go in the game when Mahoney completed a 28-yard run for a score.  Heintz kicked his third good extra-point of the game to bring the score to 24-14.

Becker scored on their last play of the game, when Tim Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) caught a 28-yard pass from Alpha Barry (Staten Island, N.Y.) to settle the final score at 24-20.

 

FOR THE HAWKS

  • Becker's Morgan totaled 102 yards on 32 rushes to total 1,124 rushing yards (1,256 all-purpose yards) in his rookie season.  Morgan holds the school record of rushing yards in a single season.
  • The Hawks' Collins logged 92 yards on 20 attempts, while Kimball gained 53 yards on just six attempts, averaging 8.8 yards per run.  After his junior campaign, Collins has career totals of: 1,397 rushing yards on 436 attempts.
  • Jared Zieman (Bethel, Conn.) played on both sides of the field and accumulated a team-high seven tackles, one sack, and 3.5 tackles for a loss of eight yards, along with six offensive yards on two rushing attempts.
  • Elijah Hill (Tampa, Fla.) also had seven tackles (six solo, one assisted) on the day with a tackle for a loss.
  • Both Christian Perkins (Melrose, Mass.) and Shawn Barnes (New Haven, Conn.) had two sacks for a loss of 16 combined yards.
  • Robert Pellerin (Gorham, Maine) finished the day with five tackles (two solo, three assisted) and a tackle for a loss of three yards.  He also punted twice, averaging 37.5 yards per punt.
  • Barry and Kimball threw for a combined 74 yards and two touchdowns in the setback.
  • Williamson recorded one catch on the final touchdown of the game, and also logged 20 yards on a kickoff return to total 48 yards on the day.
  • Becker's defense had four sacks for a loss of 23 total yards.
  • The Hawks held a 331-246 yard edge (257-91 rushing) in total offense.
  • The Hawks were 3-of-7 (43%) on fourth-down efficiency.

FOR THE NOR'EASTERS

  • UNE's Peters threw 15-for-25 on the day for a total of 155 yards and two touchdowns.  He had two fumbles, recovering one of them.
  • On the receiving end was Mahoney who led the team with 53 receiving yards on five catches.  He also had 35 rushing yards on the day.
  • Brennan registered 46 receiving yards, while Cobey Johnson (Dedham, Mass.) followed with 24 on three attempts.
  • Douglas Harrison (Branford, Conn.) was the team's leader in rushing attempts, as he collected 51 yards on seven attempts.
  • Kicker Heintz was perfect on the day, going 1-for-1 with the 33-yard field goal, and making the three extra-points.
  • Keegan Stanton-Meas (Portland, Maine) posted a game-high 11 touchdowns (six solo, five assisted) with one tackle for a loss.
  • DJ James (Chandler, Ariz.) registered eight tackles with two pass breakups.
