Spartans Blank Football In ECFC Opener

LEICESTER, Mass.-  Castleton State defeated Becker College 24-0 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference action Saturday afternoon at rain soaked Alumni Field. The win lifts the Spartans record to 3-1 (1-0 ECFC), while the Hawks remain winless at 0-4 (0-1 ECFC).

The shutout by the Spartan defense was the first in program history. Castleton also complied seven sacks which is also a school record.

Castleton got on the board with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter when Matt Fafus (Hartland, Vt.) scored on a one yard rush. The play was setup when the Spartans took over on the one yard-line on a muffed punt by the Hawks.

Castleton increased their lead to 10-0 on a 20 yard field from Bobby Lineberger (Warwick, R.I.). With 36 seconds remaining in the first half, Castleton defensive lineman Jeremy Stevens (Cambridge, N.Y.) strip sacked Becker quarterback Nasir Sinkfield-Shelton (New Rochelle, N.Y.) on the Hawks own 19 yard line.

On the very next play, Castleton running back Kevin Alberque (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) tip-toed his way down the sideline and into the end zone to put the Spartans in from 17-0 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Castleton State put the game out of reach with 12:43 remaining in regulation when Corey Brimmer (Niantic, Conn.) took a handoff through the right side of the Spartan line to make the score 24-0.

Brimmer led the Spartan rushing attack with 120 yards on 20 carries. Kevin Alberque finished 88 yards of total offense, while quarterback Tyler Higley (Vernon, Vt.) threw for 116 yards.

The Spartans record setting day on defense was paced by Darren Callan (Farifield, Vt.) and Mitch Bouton (Cooperstown, N.Y.), who registered four of the seven sacks. Ryan Stanek (Bogota, N.J.) finished with a team high nine tackles. Defensive back Derek McAdoo (Essex Junction, Vt.) hauled in two interceptions.
The Becker defense kept the Hawks in the game all day. Junior linebacker Josh Lawrence (Manhattan, N.Y.) finished with nine tackles, including three and a half for a loss. Davin Collins (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) ended his day with a game-high ten tackles. The Hawks defense also turned in four sacks.
Both teams continue Eastern Collegiate Football Conference action next Saturday, October 11th.  Becker will travel to Gallaudet University at 12pm, while Castleton returns home to face Anna Maria College at 1pm.
