Holyoke, Mass.- The Becker College Hawks defeated the Blazers of Elms College 7-4 in a nine-inning NECC conference game this afternoon.
The Blazers (4-16) are now 1-5 in conference play with todays loss. Brandon Bennett (Easthampton, Mass.) was tagged with the loss (1-3), after keeping the hawks quiet through the first three innings. The Blazers put up two runs in the second inning making the score 2-0. Andy Vasquez (Queens, N.Y.) hit a single to right center to allow catcher Nathan Ayala (Springfield, Mass.) to score. That was followed up by a sac fly to right field plating Jaeden Rasmus (Bristol, Conn.).
The Hawks (7-15) move to 4-4 in conference play with today's victory. The game started slowly for the hawks with multiple inning ending mistakes on the base paths. Until the third inning when senior Chris Testa (Providence, R.I.) hit a solo shot off Bennett, which sparked the Hawks to a 4 run fifth inning. In the fifth Josiah Shepard (Providence, R.I.) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two. Leaving two runners in scoring position for Tanyon Ventres (Holden, Mass.), who made the most of his opportunity by getting an RBI single. Plating only one because of a diving effort by the Blazers third basemen Josh Pasini (Enfield, Conn.), who kept the ball from getting into the outfield. Next, Willis Pollard (Worthington, Mass.) singles to bring in the last man in scoring position pushing the Hawks lead to 4-2. With Pollards single Ventres was able to advance to third, and later score on a sac fly by Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass) making the lead 5-2.
The Blazers were held at two going into the eighth, after Becker outfielder Danny Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) robbed sophomore Kevin Banas (Hatfield, Mass.) of what would have been a two-run homerun in the seventh. The final two runs for Elms started with a fielder's choice by Vasquez plating Ayala for a second time. With runners on the corners a wild pick off move to first base plates Rasmus, making the score 4-5 going into the bottom of the eighth.
The bottom of the eighth started with a Shepard single, and stolen base putting himself into scoring position. Testa tallied his second RBI on the day with a single down the right field line to plate Shepard. After stealing two bases, Testa was able to score a second run in the inning after Ventres hit a single to center field. Also, picking up his second RBI of the game.
The Hawks were led by a great outing from their starter Michael Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) who pitched six innings allowing only eight hits and only one earned run. Iacovelli picks up his third win and is now 3-1 on the bump for the Hawks.
The hawks will be back in action Monday the 9th at Rochdale Park for their first home game at 4:00 PM. They will be facing the Lynx of Lesley College in a NECC matchup. The Blazers will be in action again Tuesday at home against Union (NY) at 7:00 PM.
