LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Tenth Annual Becker College Senior Athletic Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Campus Center in Leicester. 49 Becker student-athletes were honored for their years of contributions to not only the athletics programs but to the Becker community as a whole.
Brenda LaRow, the Becker Head Athletic Trainer, read off a list of 27 senior student-athletes who are graduating with a 3.0 GPA or higher, while Andrea Belis, Becker's Assistant Athletics Director, recognized 28 Becker student-athletes admitted into the prestigious Chi Alpha Sigma society for academic excellence.
Matt Tittle, Becker's former Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, returned to present the inaugural Matt Tittle Award, to Travis Giard. Giard, a former student-athlete and a four-year student-employee who has been a critical part of Becker's work-study staff during his time at Becker. Giard was recently Sports Information Assistant. The award is presented to a senior student in recognition of exemplary performance and having consistently excelled in supporting the mission and values of the Becker College Athletics.
Tittle also presented the Gene R. Alley Award to Josiah Shepherd, a four-year standout for the baseball team and a key student worker for the athletics department. The award is given to an individual who has constantly demonstrated a commitment of service for the betterment of Becker Athletics.
The John J. Dorsey Scholar-Athlete Award was shared by Haley Van Zuylen of the equestrian team and Connor Jones and MacGregor Howey of the men's ice hockey team.
Dick Hurley, the Becker softball coach, presented the Outstanding Female Athlete Award to Samantha Lee. Lee has played four season as a Hawk, and has been a major contributor both in the circle and with her bat. She was a First Team All-NECC selection in 2016 where she helped Becker to the NECC Championship while winning Tournament MVP honors, then was voted Second Team All-NECC in 2017.
Brian Gorman, the Becker head coach for men's basketball, presented the Outstanding Male Athlete Award to Samuel Durodola. Durodola led Becker to three straight conference finals, a run highlighted in 2017 when Durodola was voted Player of the Year as the Hawks claimed the NECC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. On February 17 of this year, Durodola became the school's all-time leading for the NCAA era.
