LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's soccer tied visiting Fitchburg State University, 1-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester in a double-overtime thriller.
September 4, 2018
Score: Becker 1, Fitchburg State 1 (OT)
Records: Fitchburg State (1-0-1) | Becker (1-0-1)
Both teams went to their benches early and often, in light of the humid conditions of the day. Becker finally found the back of the net in the 29th minute when sophomore midfielder Shannon Kelley (Bellingham, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical) hit a cross pass from the right side and found fellow sophomore midfielder Kyra Teixeira (Old Lyme, Conn. / Lyme-Old Lyme) for the shot as the Hawks went ahead 1-0.
Fitchburg State found the equalizer in the 33rd minute when sophomore midfielder Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass. / Millbury Memorial) found freshman forward Elicia Marshall (Taunton, Mass. / Bristol-Plymouth Regional Tech) for a strike, tying the game at 1-1. That remained the score going into halftime.
The second period saw both teams come up just short in scoring opportunities. Ultimately, the game could not be decided in regulation, and the teams went into overtime.
Fatigue appeared to be a factor for both teams in the first overtime, as both teams continued to see shots go wide in the first overtime period. Then with five minutes left in the second overtime, the Falcons had a golden opportunity when they caught the Becker keeper out of position. Marshall blasted a shot from the left side, but Becker freshman defender Mariposa Nash-Gibney (Burlington, Vt. / South Burlington) headed the shot away in a game-saving play.
BY THE NUMBERS
• The Falcons held a 21-15 advantage in shots over the Hawks.
• Fitchburg sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass. / Nauset Regional) went the distance in net, allowing just one goal over 110 minutes and tallying five saves.
