Mules Fight Back to Draw with Women’s Ice Hockey

WORCESTER, Mass.  – Colby College fought back from a 0-2 deficit and scored two power-play goals in the third period to send the game into overtime, which led to a 2-2 draw between the Hawks and Mules in Saturday evening non-conference action.  

 

THE BASICS

FIRST PERIOD

Becker tallied its first goal 6:58 into the first period when Michaela Martin (Sheldon, Vt.) scored on the Hawks' first power-play opportunity with help from teammates Rachel Pitcher (Grand Isle, Vt.) and Bailey Coons (Casper, Wyo.).

 

SECOND PERIOD

The Hawks increased their lead to two 15:39 into the second period with, yet, another power play goal.  Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) directed the puck to Cameron Payne (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) who passed the puck from the left hand corner out front to Claudia Gee (Randolph, Vt.).  Gee one-timed the puck to the top-right for the 2-0 gain.  With this goal, Gee notched her 50th career point.

 

THIRD PERIOD

Despite holding a 2-0 lead heading into the third, Becker allotted the Mules two power-play goals in the frame.  Anna Cosentino (Brentwood, N.H.) scored Colby's first goal on assists from Tess Dupre (Dover, Mass.) and Lexi Cafiero (Guilford, Conn.).  She then returned the favor and setup Dupre for the equalizer with just over five minutes to go in the frame. Cosentino passed out from the left corner to Dupre who was out front for the goal, scoring blocker side.

 

OVERTIME

Becker began the overtime period on a two-man advantage. Despite outshooting the Mules during the overtime period, Colby's Savannah Shaw (Auburn, Maine) turned away seven shots on net and held the score at 2-2 for the draw.  

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • All four goals of the game were scored with a skater advantage.
  • Becker finished the game going 2-for-8 (.200) on power-plays, while Colby stood at 2-for-7 (.286).
  • Lauren Klein (Minnetonka, Minn.) won a game-high 17 faceoffs, helping the Mules take a 37-25 advantage overall.
  • Becker's netminder, Madison Rigsby (O'Fallon, Mo.) a stunning season-high 51 saves in the draw.
  • Colby's Shaw stopped 22-of-24 Hawk shots on net.

 

UP NEXT

The Mules return home on Sunday, Dec. 30 and will host Lake Forest in a 2 p.m. matchup.  The Hawks will break for the holidays and return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 11 for game one of a two-game series against Southern Maine.
