Wagner’s walk-off sweeps Softball past Lancers

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept visiting crosstown rival Worcester State University on Thursday afternoon at Russell Field in Leicester.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Becker freshman pitcher Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn. / Killingly) posted her best start of the season, allowing just one earned run over seven innings.

TURNING POINT
• Becker trailed 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh but after a solo home run by freshman catcher Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass. / Blackstone Valley Technical), the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs, with all three base runners reaching on walks. Junior Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) came in to pinch hit, drawing the bases-loaded walk on a full-count to tie the game at 6-6. Then sophomore outfielder Mary Wagner (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow) came to the plate and recorded the biggest hit of her career as she blooped one to left field for a walk-off single and leading the Becker bench exploded in celebration as the winning run scored.

TOP HAWKS
• Veillette pitched nine-and-two-thirds inning for Becker, going 2-0 on the day and allowing just two earned runs.
• Sophomore shortstop Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass. / Bristol County Agricultural) was unstoppable at the plate, as she went six-for-six, all on singles. Ellis scored three runs and tallied two RBI with one walk.
• Game 2 hero Wagner went three-for-four with a double and the game-winning RBI.
• Senior first baseman Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) hit a three run blast in the bottom of the fourth of game one, with that proving to be the difference. Weston also had an RBI groundout in the first inning of game one.
• Senior outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) had two hits and two walks, and scored the game winning run of game two.
• With Iacovelli's home run, four of her five career hits have gone yard.

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back on the field on Friday when they host Fitchburg State in a 3:00 p.m. double-header.
