Pitching sparks Softball shutouts over Eagles

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team took both games of their New England Collegiate Conference double-header against visiting Daniel Webster College on Saturday at Russell Field in Leicester. The Hawks of Becker (12-10, 6-2 NECC) took game one, 4-0, before pulling away late for a 6-0 victory in game two over the Eagles of Daniel Webster (1-14, 1-9 NECC).

 

Becker junior pitcher Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland) pitched seven shutout innings in game one, striking out a career high 14 batters. Sophomore first baseman Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) started game two and had the best pitching performance of her collegiate career, scattering just four hits and striking out six Eagles. Sophomore shortstop Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) dominated at the plate, hitting two home runs and amassing three runs batted in. Junior outfielder Jennifer Boxell (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) and freshman catcher Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) each had three hits and two RBI.

 

Daniel Webster sophomore Amber Roberts (Berlin, N.H.) went the distance for the Eagles in both games, recording three strikeouts over 12 innings.

 

The Becker Hawks are on the field next on Tuesday when they travel to Clark University for a 3:00 p.m. double-header. The Daniel Webster Eagles play next when they travel to Pine Manor College on Monday for a double-header.
