LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team swept both games of their New England Collegiate Conference double-header against visiting Southern Vermont College on Friday at Russell Field in Leicester. The Hawks of Becker (10-10, 4-2 NECC) won game one, 9-0 in six innings before their bats exploded in a 17-6 victory over the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont (4-8, 4-4 NECC) in five innings in the second game.
Becker junior second baseman Rebecca Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst) combined for four hits on the day, including a home run, two doubles and seven runs batted in. Carkhuff's homer in the bottom of the sixth of game one scored three runs and ended the game in the Hawks' favor. Junior pitcher Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland) started game one, allowing just three hits in six innings and striking out six Mountaineers. Sophomore shortstop Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I. / William E. Tolman) finished with four hits and three RBI while sophomore outfielder Vasia Murphy (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) reached base four times, scoring runs on all four occasions.
For the Mountaineers, freshman Carly Gillman (Stamford, Conn./Ridgefield HS) and junior Nicole Matthews (Pittstown, N.Y./Tamarac HS) each totaled three hits, while sophomore Lizzy Bench (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Northeast HS) hit a home run in game two.
Up next for the Becker Hawks, the team hosts Daniel Webster College on Saturday in a NECC double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m. Southern Vermont hosts Lesley University in their next contest, a double-header beginning at 11:30 a.m.
