Softball sweeps double-header against Dean

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College softball team got back on the winning track with a double-header sweep of visiting Dean College on Wednesday afternoon at Russell Field. The Hawks of Becker (8-10) won game one, 7-1, before shutting out the Bulldogs of Dean (7-5) in game two, 8-0 in five innings.

 

Becker senior first baseman Ashley Ciepiela (Adams, Mass. / Hoosac Valley) combined to amass four hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored on the day. Junior second baseman Rebecca Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst) reached base six times and scored four runs, including a solo home run in the bottom of the third of game two. Junior pitcher Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn. / Woodland) allowed just one run in seven innings in game one, striking out six Bulldogs and hitting a two-RBI double to put the game out of reach. Sophomore pitcher Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn. / Ansonia) pitched five shutout innings for the win in game two, and in the bottom of the fourth in game two, the sophomore crushed the first home run of her career over the left field fence. Freshman pinch hitter Shannon Lundy (Barnstable, Mass. / Barnstable) ended game two when her RBI single in the bottom of the fifth put the Hawks up by eight runs.

 

The Becker Hawks are back on the field on Friday when they host Southern Vermont College in a critical NECC double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Dean Bulldogs head to Lesley University on Friday for a double-header beginning at 3:00 p.m.
