LEICESTER, Mass.- The Becker College softball team swept their New England Collegiate doubleheader against Wheelock College with scores of 12-0 and 10-0. The sweep lifts the Hawks record to 13-9 (6-0 NECC), while the Wildcats fall to 4-12 (3-5 NECC).
Becker was led by senior outfielder Jessica Wheelahan (Watertown, Conn.) who went 4 for 6 on the day with six RBI and four runs scored. Two of Wheelahan's hits were homeruns as she finished the day ten total bases. Freshman Jennifer VanAlphen (Hudson, N.Y.) also had a big day, going 5 for 7 with three RBI and five runs scored. Jaclyn Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) and Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, R.I.) chipped in with three hits apiece. All three of Kemanchuck's hits were for extra bases.
Freshman Mikayla Lawrence (Pembroke, Mass.), Adrianna Dowdy (East Haven, Conn.) and Kerrie Bellerose (Thompson, Conn.) all collected their first collegiate hits in the victory, while junior Ashley Ciepiela (Adams, Mass.) also belted her first homerun of the season.
Senior pitcher Kelsey Norberg (Uxbridge, Mass.) improved her record to 9-1 on the year after allowing just four hits in the five inning shutout in game one. Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn.) captured the shutout victory in the nightcap after striking out five wildcats, including three in the top of the fifth to preserve the sweep.
Rachel Simpson (Littleton, Mass.), Samantha Leahon (Castleton, N.Y.) and Lacey Allen (Gloucester, Mass.) had two hits each for the Wildcats.
Emma Spencer (Thomaston, Maine) suffered both losses in the circle for Wheelock.
Both teams will hit the road to continue New England Collegiate Conference action on Saturday, April 16th. Becker will head to Daniel Webster for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with the Eagles, while Wheelock travels to Elms College for a 2:00 p.m. start.
