Softball Falls To Wesleyan

CLERMONT Fla.-The Hawks dropped the second game of their spring break trip to Clermont Florida, losing to Wesleyan University 9-1 at Foundation Academy.

In her first outing of the year, Samantha Lee (Prospect, Conn.) took the loss throwing 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up 17 hits and nine runs, six earned, while striking out two Wesleyan hitters.  Rachel Kantor (North Kingstown, R.I.) improved to 1-2 on the season, throwing 6 strong innings for Wesleyan giving up four hits while striking out seven Hawk batters and only allowing one earned run.  With the win, Wesleyan University improves to 7-3 on the year.

After a scoreless first inning, Wesleyan University was able to plate five runs in the second inning.  Rachel Kantor (Prospect, Conn.) began the inning off with a double to right field and was later driven in by a single from Su Prado (Malverne, N.Y.).  Annalie Walsh-Costello (Worcester, Mass.) would plate Prado on the very next pitch with a single to right field.  After Lee was able to get the next two Wesleyan hitters to pop and ground out, Isabel Linzer (Arlington, Va.) came through for Wesleyan with a RBI double to left field, bringing home Walsh-Costello and the third Wesleyan run of the inning.  Wesleyan was able to load the bases on an infield single and HBP before Rielly Wieners (West Springfield, Mass.) plated the fourth and fifth run of the inning with a single to center field.

The Wesleyan offense continued to attack the Hawks in the third inning by scoring one more run on a single by Julie McDonald (Commack, N.Y.).  After being held quiet in the fourth inning, the Wesleyan offense came to life again in the fifth plating two on a pass ball, and RBI single from Isabel Linzer (Arlington, Va.), her second of the game.  The Wesleyan offense concluded their scoring ending the game in the fifth inning with a RBI single from Julie McDonald (Commack, N.Y.), her second of the game.

The Becker Hawks got their first and only run of the game with some clutch hitting by freshman Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, Conn).  After a HBP, Belenchia collected her first collegiate hit and RBI doubling to right.  Freshman Vasia Murphy (Dracut, MA) also collected her first collegiate hit in the contest against Wesleyan.

The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow as they will be taking on The University of Wisconsin River-Falls and Smith College at 1:00pm and 3:00pm  at Legends Way in Clermont, Fla.
