Men’s Ice Hockey Edged by Seahawks, 3-2

PORTSMOUTH, R.I.  – The Becker men's ice hockey team overcame a three-goal deficit, but still fell short of Salve Regina as the Seahakws topped the Hawks 3-2 in a Saturday evening Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game.

 

THE BASICS

FIRST PERIOD

Paul Boutoussov (Dana Point, Calif.) gave Salve Regina the first and what proved to be the only lead of the game 8:24 into the first period when Nick Cyr (Mount Laurel, N.J.) set him up for the score.  Six minutes later Colin Clapton (Canton, Mass.) scored on an assist from Vincenzo Renda (Wesmount, Quebec) to increase the Seahawks lead to two.  Salve Regina held a commanding 18-7 shot advantage in the first.

 

SECOND PERIOD

Salve Regina's Boutoussov scored his second goal of the game just 56 seconds into the second period to advance the score to 3-0.  Later in the period, Becker reached the board on a goal from James Perry (Atkinson, N.H.), assisted by Corey Schafer (Johnstown, Pa.), setting the score at 3-1.

 

THIRD PERIOD   

Becker scored 6:48 into the third period when Alex Kielczewski (Grand Prairie, Texas) and Sean Dunphy (Pawtucket, R.I.) passed to an open Romain Wild (Mex, Switzerland) to make it a one-goal game.  Despite the attempted comeback, the Seahawks held off the Hawks and prevailed 3-2.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • In total, Salve Regina held a 52-22 margin in shots.
  • Salve Regina's Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) earned his 15th win in net, as he turned away 20-of-22 shots on net.
  • Ryan Clifford (Coventry, R.I.) matched a career-high saves (49) on net in the setback.
  • Salve Regina did not commit a penalty in the game. 
  • The Hawks are 10-15-0 all-time against the Seahawks.  Salve Regina have won seven in a row.

 

UP NEXT

The Hawks will finish up the 2018-19 season next Saturday (Feb. 16) as they will host Curry at 6:10 p.m. at the Worcester Ice Center.  Prior to the start of the game, Becker will recognize its men's ice hockey senior class.
