MARLBORO, Mass. --- The Becker College men's ice hockey team lost 4-2 to visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Thursday evening at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro.
After a scoreless first period, the Leopards of Wentworth (5-15-3, 3-11-2 CCC) finally got on the board 6:00 into in the second period when sophomore forward Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich. / Brockville (CCHL)) took a wrist shot into the top left corner from the point off a power play, assisted by junior forward Erik Andersson (Madison, N.J. / South Shore (USPHL)) and sophomore forward Matthew Kennedy (Mount Pearl, N.L. / Arizona State (NCAA Division I Independent)). It was the fourth goal of the year for Weiss.
Wentworth got their second goal with 5:35 remaining in the second when sophomore forward Byron Carlisle (Orleans, Mass. / East Coast (EHL)) found the back of the net for his first goal of the year, assisted by junior forward Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass. / Dexter School) and the Leopards led 2-0 after two.
Then 6:16 into the third, the Leopards scored again when McDonough rebounded his own shot and the visitors went ahead 3-0.
The Ice Hawks of Becker (6-16-1, 5-10-1 CCC) finally got on the board with 7:42 left in the game when sophomore forward Brandon Morgan (Rochester, N.Y. / Syracuse Stars), the reigning Becker Athlete of the Week, scored his team-leading tenth goal of the year on a breakaway. Then just over a minute later, Becker senior forward Nicholas McKee (Bakersfield, Calif. / Fresno Monsters) pulled the Ice Hawks to within one on his fourth goal of the season, assisted by senior forward Connor Merrick (Manchester, N.H. / NH Junior Monarchs) on a two-on-one.
Becker attempted to score the equalizer in a flurry at the end, pulling the goalie with less than a minute left. But Wentworth scored on an empty-netter from sophomore forward Paul Filippone (Cranston, R.I. / Boston Bandits (EHL)) with 27 seconds left for the final score.
Wentworth junior goalie Ryan Hubbard (West Bridgewater, Mass. / Plattsburgh State (SUNYAC)) recorded 34 stops. Becker senior goalie Tyler Stepke (Mars, Pa. / Three Rivers Vengeance) finished with 29 saves between the pipes for the Ice Hawks. Becker outshot Wentworth, 36-33.
The Ice Hawks of Becker play their next game at Endicott College on Saturday in a 2:50 p.m. game. The Leopards of Wentworth travel to the University of New England on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
