LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's basketball team is gearing up for their twelfth season under head coach Brian Gorman.
Last season, the Hawks reached the finals of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championships for the seventh time (third consecutive) in the ten years Becker has been a member of the league. Trailing by double-digits early on, the Hawks' rally came up just short as they fell 67-62 at Southern Vermont College.
Leading this year's team is senior guard Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass. / St. John's). As a junior last season, Davis became the 19th player in the history of the program to score 1,000 points for his career, on the way to earning NECC First Team All-Conference honors. Davis averaged 20 points per game with 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He further established himself as one of the premier three-point shooters in the region, shooting 37 percent from behind the arc. An iron man on the court, Davis ranked sixth in the nation in minutes. As a sophomore, Davis was the NECC Tournament MVP of the 2017 playoffs after he sparked the Hawks to that season's championship.
Senior forward Dewayne Thomas (Lowell, Mass. / Lowell) will provide an inside presence. Last season as a junior-transfer, Thomas averaged 8.0 ppg with 7.8 rpg while shooting 53 percent from the floor.
Other top projected contributors to this year's team will be junior forward Antonio White Jr. (Middletown, Conn. / Middletown), who was voted NECC Rookie of the Year in 2017, and sophomore guard Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn. / Universal Audenried Charter), who was twice named NECC Rookie of the Week last season.
Joining Gorman on the bench this season is Terrance Favors (Becker Class of 2012), who returns to the program as an assistant coach after playing overseas. Favors, an inductee into Becker College Athletic Hall of Fame last year, produced one of the greatest careers by any student-athlete during his time at Becker, leading the Hawks to their first ever NECC Championship in 2012 and to their first two trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The Hawks lose Samuel Durodola from last year's team, who ended his storied career as Becker's all-time scoring leader in the NCAA era with 1699 career points.
Becker was picked to finish fourth in the NECC in a poll by the conference coaches.
The Hawks will open their season on Monday when they travel to Anna Maria College for a 2:00 p.m. game.
