Sophomore linebacker Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport-South Manor) of the Becker College football team was named the Commonwealth Coast Football Defensive Player of the Year as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Bianco was a defensive standout both on the Becker squad and in the conference. He led the league in many defensive categories including solo tackles (51), total tackles (119), tackles per game (11.9), tackles for a loss (12.5), and interceptions (5). He also had four sacks on the year placing him fifth in the league and two forced fumbles. Bianco had double digit tackles in every contest except one. He had impressive tackle numbers against MIT and Curry making 22 and 19 stops, respectively. His most notable game of the season came in the Hawks CCC Football victory over Nichols in which Bianco picked off a NCAA record-tying five passes, even returning one for a touchdown. That week Bianco was named CCC Football Defensive Player of the Week. Bianco currently ranks tenth in the country in tackles per game at 11.9 per game.
In addition to Bianco, senior defensive back Shane Padeni (Leicester, Mass. / Leicester) was named First Team All-CCC Defensive Team, while junior defensive lineman Daniel Whittenburg (Eastford, Conn. / Woodstock Academy) was voted Second Team All-CCC Defense.
Becker was also recognized with the Sportsmanship Award.
