Warriors Outlast Baseball, 9-5

AUBURNDALE, Fla.- The Becker College baseball team fell to Eastern Connecticut State University 9-5 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. The Warriors are now 1-0 on the year, while the Hawks slide to 3-3.

The game was scoreless until Eastern Connecticut go on the board in the top of the fifth when DJ Scavone (Auburn, Mass.) blasted a two-run home run over the right field fence.

After Eastern Connecticut added a run in the top of the six to make it 3-0, Becker chipped away at the deficit with a run in the bottom of the inning. After Ben Mazzone (Bristol, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, breaking up a perfect game by the starting pitcher Jordan Muchin (West Hartford, Conn.). The very next at bat, Daniel Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) put the Hawks on the board with an RBI triple into the right centerfield gap, breaking up the no-hitter.

Eastern Connecticut increased their lead to 4-1 with a run in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the eighth the Hawks came soaring back with five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Freshman Coby Hussey (Claremont, N.H.) got the inning started with a double down the left field line. After Daniel Diaz reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners, Josiah Shepherd (Providence, R.I.) doubled to right center, plating Hussey to cut the deficit to 4-2. Chris Testa would follow with a two-run single to left, knotting the game at 4-4. Becker took the lead when Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score Testa with the go ahead run.

Eastern Connecticut exploded for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn a 9-5 victory.

Becker returns to action tomorrow when they play Central (Iowa) at 9:00 a.m.
