Ephs too much for Baseball in slugfest

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College baseball team lost 15-5 to visiting Williams College on Tuesday afternoon at Rochdale Park. The Ephs of Williams improve to 10-4 on the season while the Hawks of Becker drop to 10-10.


The Ephs struck first in the top of the third when sophomore shortstop Kellen Hatheway (Armonk, NY / Byram Hills) hit an RBI single through the left side to drive in senior left fielder Jackson Parese (Williamstown, MA / Taft), and Williams took a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, freshman first baseman Kyle McGrath (Dover, MA / Nobles & Greenough) singled through the right side to drive in Hatheway, and the visitors went up 2-0.


In the top of the fifth, Williams capitalized on a Becker throwing error on a stolen base attempt, with both Hatheway and junior second baseman Jack Roberts (Vineyard Haven, MA / Marthas Vineyard) scoring on the play, and the Ephs went ahead 4-0.


The in the top of the sixth, the Ephs scored four runs on RBI base hits from Parese, Hatheway and Roberts.


Down 8-0, the Hawks refused to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the sixth, senior designated hitter Niko Bedell     (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport-South Manor) came to the plate with the bases loaded and found a gap on the left side, driving home junior second baseman Christopher Testa (Providence, R.I. / LaSalle) and senior catcher Trevor Read (Colorado Springs, Colo. / St. Mary's).


Now ahead 8-2, the Ephs got a run back in the top of the seventh when Parese picked up his second RBI single of the day.


Then in the top of the eighth, Roberts hit a two run homer to right to put Williams ahead 11-2.


Becker managed three more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Bedell hit an RBI single, sophomore left fielder Evan Barrera (West Warwick, R.I. / West Warwick) scored off a wild pitch and junior catcher Kevin Perez (Jersey City, N.J. / Union City) hit into an RBI groundout.


Finally, in the top of the ninth, sophomore Jack Overholt (Oakton, VA / Hill School) hit a two-RBI base hit up the middle. Hatheway hit yet another RBI base hit on the very next at-bat, followed by another run scoring off a hit from Roberts for the final score.


The Hawks of Becker will be back on the field on Wednesday when they host Anna Maria College at 4:00 p.m. The Ephs of Williams travel to Amherst College on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
